I had to laugh out loud at the "thought" of the Memphis Freethought Alliance holding Darwin Day with a whopping 50 people in attendance (Feb. 12 article). The poll conducted by the University of Tennessee is revealing indeed. One-half of all Tennesseans don't believe evolution is a well-established scientific theory. And 44 percent believe intelligent design is just as valid. Sounds free thinking to me.
By mentioning the "shock" of people moving here from other areas, this article not so subtly suggested that Tennesseans are ignorant hicks for having the audacity to question a theory over what they believe is Biblical fact. The only thing free about the Freethought Alliance is that you can believe whatever you want, just not the Bible.
As far as "shouting what evolution is," our children get that shoved down their throats in science classes throughout their school years. And if that doesn't do it, they get professors in college like the one quoted in the article who "warns" them of exactly what they will be learning in his class. He goes on to threaten them that if they can't handle it they should leave because "it is not up for debate." Sounds to me like he can't handle the debate.
The fact is, one day everyone will know the truth. On that day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. He is the creator of the universe and all that it contains. On that day, there truly will be no debate.
